C8 Aromatic Fraction – Xylene Isomers and Ethylbenzene Cut

C8 Aromatic Fraction is a liquid stream containing aromatic hydrocarbons with eight carbon atoms. The main C8 aromatics are the three xylene isomers and ethylbenzene.

A commercial C8 cut is usually a mixture rather than a pure chemical, and its exact composition depends on the feed and the separation process. It is typically used as a feedstock for further xylene or ethylbenzene separation, or as a feed for petrochemical aromatics processing.

A C8-rich fraction is not automatically purified xylene or ethylbenzene, and should not be advertised as any one of them without purification and testing.

Description

C8 Aromatic Fraction is a liquid stream containing aromatic hydrocarbons with eight carbon atoms. The main C8 aromatics are the three xylene isomers and ethylbenzene. A commercial C8 cut is usually a mixture rather than a pure chemical, and its exact composition depends on the feed and separation process.

How is the C8 fraction recovered?

When a mixed aromatic feed contains C8-range constituents, a distillation system can separate a lighter C8-rich cut from a heavier C9-rich cut. The amount of C8 recovered depends on how much is already present in the feed and on the agreed cut points and separation efficiency. Distillation alone does not convert C9 molecules into C8 molecules.

A C8-rich fraction is not automatically purified xylene or ethylbenzene. Their boiling points are close, so producing high-purity individual components typically needs additional specialized separation. The product name and grade should follow its composition analysis and buyer specification.

What is the C8 fraction used for?

Depending on its composition and purity, a C8 aromatic stream may be used as:

  • A feedstock for further xylene or ethylbenzene separation
  • A feed for petrochemical aromatics processing
  • A solvent or blending component when it meets the relevant specification

Pure para-xylene, ortho-xylene and ethylbenzene have distinct downstream chemical uses, but a mixed C8 cut should not be advertised as any one of them without purification and testing. The applicable safety data sheet governs handling and storage.

Key properties to check

Key results include:

  • GC composition for the xylene isomers and ethylbenzene
  • Total C8 aromatics
  • Distillation range and density
  • Sulfur and water
  • Other buyer-specific impurities

A feed-to-product mass balance and a recent Certificate of Analysis support the stated grade.
